The PartyFriendz Children’s Party Trend Predictions for 2020

2019 is drawing to a close and a new year of fun and partying awaits us in 2020. This year the Unicorn continued to rule the roost (or the stable, I suppose) which was no surprise. But it also brought some unusual - and ear splittingly frustrating - surprises along the way with dance crazes like Baby Shark repeating time and time again throughout the year!

Last December, we did a pretty good job (if we do say so ourselves) at predicting the trends for children’s parties in 2019 (see how well we did here). So here we are with the new year in sight, and we’re going to try our hand at some more predictions for 2020.

Llamalicious

Move aside Unicorns, 2020 will be the year of the Llama!

Alright, alright, so the likelihood of the Llama knocking the Unicorn off the top spot for children’s parties is slim. After all, a Llama Princess isn’t anywhere near as magical as a Unicorn Princess!

But after tough competition from the pugs and flamingos, this South American camelid is finally making its way into people’s hearts.

So, this year, be prepared for Llama tableware, Llama balloons and even Llama fancy dress! Just don’t mention the spitting.

Frozen in Place ‘til 2021

Anyone else notice how everything started to freeze over in November? From toys to soup cans, clothing to toilet seats (yep, there are Frozen branded toilet seats!); everywhere you looked the faces of Disney’s most popular sisters were staring back at you.

And we don’t expect this obsession with Disney’s Frozen to change any time soon.

With the home release date of Frozen 2 pencilled in for February 2020, we expect Frozen Fever to grip the nation even tighter than before. And just when we thought everyone had finally let it go… (I wonder how many times one can use this gag before it gets old?).

It’s no Wonder why these Women will be a hit

I know what you’re thinking, Superheroes have been a party trend for the last decade or more. And with Avengers: Endgame (2019) being the highest grossing cinematic release of all time, it’s no surprise that the Superhero trend isn’t going down without a fight.

But this year, it’s the turn of the super-heroine.

2020 will bring the release of some major female-led blockbusters, including Wonder Woman 1984, Black Widow, Birds of Prey and Mulan (yep, we know she’s technically a ‘princess’ but her ferocity knows no bounds!), released in June, May, Feb and March respectively. Expect to see these impressive female role models dominating the party scene before the end of the year.

Balloon Letters Are Exploding

Where 2019 brought us enormous balloon garlands, 2020 will bring us enormous balloon lettering.

And this won’t be limited to just your child’s name or age.

The trend of the “balloon phrase” has begun, with party hosts spelling out entire sentences with balloon lettering to display to their guests. In fact, some online stores have now incorporated a ‘balloon builder’ function that allows you to visualise your phrase before you buy. Just make sure you have enough room to fit all those balloons at your party venue!

Disney+ even more Disney

It’s no doubt that Disney dominated cinema screens across the UK with their film releases in 2019. And in 2020 they are set to dominate the home cinema too with the release of their new streaming service, Disney+ in March. Alongside the classics, Disney are producing a variety of homegrown series in the nature of Netflix & Amazon Prime.

Series such as Star Wars spin-off, The Mandalorian and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (what a ridiculously long title!) have already proved to be a big hit with American audiences.

We’re expecting to be blasting out High School Musical ballads at parties in 2020 much like we did with The Greatest Showman in 2018.

Piñatas – Smashing their way to your heart

The Piñata has been a part of Mexican party tradition for many centuries. But this explosive sweetie-filled party game has only recently hit the UK and is set to rain candy all over the party scene in 2020.

Its recent popularity is largely down to the latest videogame craze amongst kids; Fortnite.

Not only has this online gaming fad brought us party dance classics such as the Floss and the Dab, but Fornite is also well known for its mascot and in-game lootbox, the Llama Piñata (see, Llama’s again! They’re popping up everywhere!). It will soon be time to get the baseball bat out (and read up on the health and safety!) for when this trend bashes its way into popularity.

Causing a Splash

The casting announcement for Disney’s new live-action remake of The Little Mermaid made the internet explode in 2019. And this was just one small step in the journey of Mermaid World Domination.

With Disney’s remake set to hit screens sometime in 2021, we expect hype for all things mermaid to make a real splash in the 2020 party scene.

Without doubt there’ll soon be a bottomless ocean of mermaid decorations, mermaid character visits and even mermaid swimming parties. We’re also crossing our hooks that pirates will get a free voyage back into popularity alongside it.
